Jones Memorial Scholarship Established in Memory of the Founder of Jones Mortuary The late Charles A. Jones and his daughter Sandra Jones Spencer EAST PALO ALTO,CA— Charles A. Jones graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science , and received his funeral directors and embalmers license in 1976. That year he also established the Jones Mortuary, Inc in East Palo Alto. Upon opening the doors of the new mortuary, he developed a policy to provide free funeral services for newborns under one month old, to make sure these fami- lies received a dignified burial service. Jones fervently sup- ported community programs that helped young people. He valued education and had quietly assisted more than 200 students in completing their higher education. Jones served on the Advisory Council for the Department of Mortuary Science at American River College in Sacra- mento for over so 10 years. During his successful career, he served as a mentor and role model for many; his work in the community still speaks volumes about a person who really cared for others. Charles Jones died August 15, 2017. “Though he faced numer- ous obstacles growing up in a rural southern commu- nity and throughout life, he didn’t allow these chal- lenges to prevent him from reaching his goals because his parents taught him life principles of integrity, trust, honesty, self-respect, how to treat others, self-discipline, and they were examples, themselves of a strong work ethic and to always strive for excellence,” states daugh- ter Sandra Jones Spencer. “Dad always believed that people and/or circumstances don’t define who you are or what you become – You do.” Also a licensed funeral di- rector, Sandra is dedicated to continuing the work of her father and knows the impor- tance of a quality education. She set up the annual Charles A. Jones Memorial Scholar- ship, established to help de- serving students realize their dreams of a funeral career as he did. The 100 Black Wom- en of Funeral Service is hon- ored to have Sandra Jones Spencer as a life member of their organization. News Educational ContinueD
