These new scholarships join the 21 other scholar- ships awarded annually to promote and assist young professionals joining the flo- ral and horticultural indus- tries. The application dead- line for all AFE scholarships is May 1, 2018. The Long Island Flow- er Growers Association–Bob Gunther Memorial Scholar- ship was established in mem- ory of the late BobGunther, owner of Gunther’s Green- houses &Florist in Oceans- ide, NY. It is intended for students from Long Island and New York who are studying ornamental horti- culture at a community col- lege or four-year institution in New York. This includes floriculture, landscape main- tenance, landscape design, turf and any other courses of study related to ornamental horticulture. The CalFlowers Scholarship, established by CalFlow- ers, is for the undergradu- ate students attending an ac- credited California college or university (first priority) or an undergraduate Cali- fornia resident attending an accredited college or univer- sity elsewhere in the United States (second priority). Student applying for this scholarship do not need to be majoring in an agricultur- al program, but must dem- onstrate a commitment to seeking employment in the floriculture industry after graduation. A work history or a meaningful internship experience in floriculture is necessary if the applicant is not obtaining an agricultur- al degree. Students should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The American Floral En- dowment is a nonprofit or- ganization dedicated to ad- vancing the floriculture and horticulture industry through funding research, educational grants and schol- arships. Since 1961, more than $15 million has been funded in research and edu- cational projects, and more than $2 million has been funded in scholarships and internships designed to at- tract and retain the future leaders of the industry.
