Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, Royal Oak, MI (Wm Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, Utica) NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award Recipients continued New Book records the 172-year-old Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home’s Vibrant Legacy, its Place in US History In 1850, an orphaned British immigrant established a wood-working business in the 1700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, just one block west of the nation’s fairly new presidential residence, the White House. Little did young Gawler know, his carpentry and casket business that he later expanded to include a livery stable, actually serve a majority of the presidents of his day and for future Gawler generations. In their new book, One Block West of the White House: Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home: Undertaker for the Presidents, Duane Hills and co-author Alice Adams have researched and reconstructed, with primary sources from the mortuary’s archives, the stories, families and dignitaries served by four generations of Gawler funeral directors and embalmers. “In researching and writing this book, we discovered not only the evolution of Gawler’s legacy but also the unequivocal historical parallels between funerals and history at every level, from local to regional and national impact,” Adams said. Hills, a veteran funeral service professional and president of Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home for the past decade, said the book was written while Gawler relatives were still willing and able to share memories, their impressions and experiences, growing up in a circle of respected Gawler families. “I believe it’s time for funeral directors to begin valuing the arrangements they make and the services they direct as important historical events, not only in the lives of the families experiencing loss but also in the communities in which they serve,” said Hills. “What we, as directors and embalmers do is our contribution to society, whomever the decedent may be. During their lives,” he explained, “they contribute to their community – from their offspring who will continue our society to the work they do, their volunteerism and the town’s growth. “In writing this book, our purpose was twofold: first, to capture the history of this funeral home; and second, to encourage similar projects throughout the nation – before precious funeral home history is lost.” “Every funeral director and every funeral home become stewards of their own unique stories and experiences,” Adams added, recalling her recurrent discovery of funeral homes that, unknowingly, had secured their place in history when they buried the first Texan executed by an electric chair, the firm directing services of the detective who was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald at the time he was murdered by Jack Ruby in full view of the national television audience…and the list goes on.
