Churchman Jr. Funeral Home in Newark Damaged by Fire NEWARK,NJ— The James E. Churchman Jr. Funeral Home, a long-time fixture in Newark’s West Ward, was severely damaged by fire on July 1, 2020. Fire- fighters responded to the blaze at the funeral home shortly after noon and the fire was quickly brought under control, according to a press release from the Newark Department of Public Safety. According to a release on the NJSFDA website the building was ruined and cannot be used. Simone Churchman, the firm’s manager and daughter of Edith C. Churchman, CFSP, said the fire began in their living quarters above the funeral home. No one was injured, she said, but her dog was killed in the fire. No decedents’ remains were affected by the fire. Edith Churchman said the building, where the fu- neral home has been locat- ed since 1971, will need significant rebuilding. She said the firm, family- owned and operated for more than 120 years, abso- lutely plans to rebuild. The fire resulted in not only extensive damage to the funeral home but also to the second and third floor residence. Most of Edith’s and her family’s personal belongings have been destroyed. Edith is the secretary of the Essex, Union and West Hudson Funeral Direc- tors Association. “I’ve been overwhelmed with con- tact from funeral directors who have offered me ev- erything,” Edith said. “For that I’m grateful.” The Garden State Funer- al Directors Association is accepting monetary do- nations to help offset the costs of temporary hous- ing, clothing, personal need purchases and recov- ery. Checks, payable to the Garden State Funeral Di- rectors Association, can be sent to:  Madonna’s Mul- tinational Home for Fu- nerals, 109 Howe Ave., Passaic NJ 07055.
