The heavens received this day the Blessed Virgin, the angels were glad, the archangels enjoyed, the throngs sang… the cherubim and seraphim sang laudings and praisings… (The Golden Legend) . This legend is a collection of religious stories published in the thirteenth century that became the inspiration for many Renaissance works of art. In this exquisite, allegorical painting by renowned Renaissance artist Reni, the Virgin, resplendent in glory, is clothed in a robe of vibrant blue. This is the color most associated with her in art and is a reference to the Assumption. Seraphim (also called putti in Italian Renaissance art) and cherubim guide the Blessed Mother toward a golden light emanating from above.
