It was founded in 1907 by John and Mamie Larkin . A tailor by trade, John saw the need for funeral services and his effort to establish a mor- tuary was well supported by the community. Their daughter, Valtena Larkin Scott , grew up in the busi- ness and became a teacher. Valtena had two sons, John Dustin Scott and Thomas Lee Scott . John D. graduated from Atlanta College of Mortuary Service and joined his grandparents in the funeral business. Valtena eventually retired from teaching and went to work at the funeral home as well. She served as chap- lain and musician for the Alabama Funeral Directors and Morticians Association . She was named National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association “Woman of the Year” in 1982. I was in Las Vegas last month, not to party or gamble, but to attend my Grandson’s funeral. He was 18 years old, and was at work when a mind- less fool walked into his place of business and murdered two people. My Grandson was one of the two. Services are set, my wife and I travel to Las Vegas and are among the many mourners.
