He dedicated his entire life to the funeral industry, having served as a second-generation funeral director at the Auclair Funeral Home, which was founded by his parents, Albert and Alice Auclair. In 1967, upon the death his father, Charles assumed operation of the business and continued to serve as president. TY J. DIERKES of Zanesville, OH died September 21, 2023 at the age of 60. A long-time funeral director, he started working for the Bolin Funeral Home in 1987. Dierkes became a partner of the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home in 2004 and sole owner in 2018. A 1985 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. JOSEPH A. KLEIN of Spencerport, NY died September 27, 2023 at the age of 75. He operated his funeral business out of the Harris Funeral Home in Rochester for the last fifteen years. A 1976 graduate of the Simmons Institute of Funeral Service, he was a member of the New York State Funeral Directors Association and the Rochester Funeral Directors Association. WILLIAM E. MANKER JR of Miami, FL died September 22, 2023 at the age of 91. A master embalmer and mortician, he founded Manker Funeral Home in 1959 and had mentored and trained countless professionals throughout his career. ADAM J. ROSSI JR of Canton, OH died September 20, 2023 at the age of 96. A licensed funeral director and embalmer, he worked alongside his father, Adam, Sr at the Rossi Funeral Home in Canton. Rossi Jr and his brother, Marion Rossi eventually took over ownership of the firm, having operated it together for over fifty years. He also served as an insurance agent for over sixty-six years. A graduate of the Cleveland College of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, where he had served as president of District 16 and was presently the chairman od the board. ber of the Erie-Niagara Funeral Directors Association and the New York State Funeral Directors Associations. Portions of his extensive library of funeral service and history publications are now held by the National Museum of Funeral History in Texas. Richard also authored published articles on funeral service history and Buffalo’s past undertakers. RICHARD H. WEDEKINDT of Amherst, NY died September 9, 2023 at the age of 81. A fourth-generation funeral director, he worked alongside his father, Harry and twin brother, Raymond in owning and operating the Harry A. Wedekindt Funeral Home in Amherst. Richard and his brother also managed Amherst Funeral/Cremation Service from 1971-1993. He was a memassociated degree in applied science from the School of Mortuary Science at Forest Park Community College and has done additional study at Webster University and Washington University. He was a member of the Missouri State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, National Funeral Directors Association, and the St. Louis Gateway Funeral Directors Association. AUSTIN AUGUSTUS LAYNE JR of Jennings, MO died October 1, 2023 at the age of 87. A funeral director and embalmer for over 30 years, he established the Austin A. Layne Mortuary, Inc in 1979 after working for the Wade Funeral Home in St. Louis. Layne Jr earned his tion funeral director, he owned and operated Lafferty Funeral Home, which was established in 1848 by his great-great grandfather, W.V. Lafferty. A 1962 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he was honored by the Ohio Funeral Directors Association in 2013 with his 50-year award. JOHN THEODORE LAFFERTY of West Union, OH died September 12, 2023 at the age of 82. A fifth-generathe age of 84. He dedicated his entire career in the funeral industry, having served the Jerry Spears Funeral Home, DeVore Funeral Home, and Clark Grave Vault Co, where he was the national sales manager. Garee was currently working as a funeral director for Moreland Funeral Homes. He was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. RICHARD M. “DICK” GAREE of Centerburg, OH formerly of Sunbury, OH died September 6, 2023 at president of the Professional Funeral Alliance of Springfield, IL in 2011. Hakeman spent the final years of his career as the general manager of Schreffler Funeral Homes in Kankakee County. A 1987 graduate of the Worsham College of Mortuary Science, he was the recipient of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association scholarship for academics. MICHAEL B. HAKEMAN of Fairview Park, OH died August 23, 2023 at the age of 61. He began his career in the funeral industry by working at his family’s funeral home. Hakeman then joined the Champion Chemical Company in 1996 and, in a very short period, was recognized as the top sales executive from 1998 until 2000. After joining Federated Funeral Directors in 2004 as a business consultant, he co-founded and served as vice the Hastings Funeral Home in 1952 alongside his wife, Mary. A 1949 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, Hastings served as a past president of the West Virginia Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association from 1985-1986 and was a longtime member of the National Funeral Directors Association. DEWEY SMITH HASTINGS of Morgantown, WV died September 7, 2023 at the age of 97. A funeral director and embalmer, he served his apprenticeship at a local funeral home in Morgantown before establishing neral Home, purchasing the firm in 1962. A 1948 graduate of the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, he was a member and served as liaison officer for the Veterans Benefits for the Maine Funeral Directors Association and was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. LEO J. MURPHY of Augusta, ME died September 22, 2023 at the age of 95. A funeral director since 1946, he had been employed by the J. Paul Kelleher Funeral Home in Millinocket for over 12 years, moving to Augusta in 1959 to accept employment at Plummer Futo pursue death care education, earning his Bachelor of Mortuary Science degree at CCMS. He most recently served as the Director of Business Services and Educational Cremation Center for CCMS. A licensed funeral director in both Indiana and Ohio, Toby was also a certified crematory operator and certified funeral celebrant. TOBY MICHAEL DAY of Moores Hill, IN died September 27, 2023 at the age of 49. Due to health issues in 2016 Toby left a twenty-two-year career in collision repair and began his second career in deathcare. After earning associate degrees at both Ivy Tech Community College and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Toby served his funeral director apprenticeship in his home state of Indiana. He left full-time funeral service practice in Corning, NY. In 1974, Brown and his wife, Kathryn started Brown Funeral Home in Hicksville and continued to own and operate it until their retirement in 2003. A 1964 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. DON L. BROWN of Hicksville, OH died September 23, 2023 at the age of 89. A retired funeral director, he had previously worked at Perkins and Reeb Funeral Home in Hicksville, OH and Carpenter Funeral Home tablished what is now known as Brown Funeral Homes, Inc. A 1986 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, and the Juniata Valley Funeral Directors Association, where he currently served as president. DANIEL B. “DAN” BROWN of Mifflintown, PA died September 15, 2023 at the age of 64. A fifth-generation funeral director, he owned and operated the Brown Funeral Home in Mifflintown, having taken over the business in 1989 from his father, R.
