Two key volunteers whose help was invaluable were Kristine Bartley and Mike Rowlen,” says Ganesh. “Harnessing volunteer engagement is so important to the success of your cemetery,” adds Ganesh. “So many people come up with the idea that they want to volunteer. You just need to access that energy.” He adds that the city leaders have been supportive, and the community wants to roll up its sleeves and help. It’s also important to leverage public funds and partner with private donors. According to Ganesh the work is not done. They still need to work on the retaining walls and fence lines and the receiving vaults need to be preserved. He expects to see great changes in the next five years for the 180th anniversary. Ganesh says, “In five years, we’ll have done a complete 180 on how Woodland looked, and the many efforts we made to improve it.” Visit www.dsm.city/cemeteries to learn more about all the cemeteries managed by the city of Des Moines.
