This also gave funeral homes something that they could sell and not give away.” Crouch says they also noticed that people were rejecting urns because they intended to scatter the ashes. Why spend money on an expensive urn if you have no intention of keeping the remains? So, Passages International developed scatter tubes. They are made from recycled material and have a die-cut area to push out for easy scattering. They offer a large selection of 26 different designs with many available in up to five sizes. They also provide scattering kits to allow families to split the remains into different scattering tubes. They then can scatter in different locations and every family member can be involved. In most cremations, a basic cardboard box is used to hold the body. “We didn’t think that was dignified, environmentally friendly or very profitable for the funeral home,” Crouch says. As Passages focused more and more on renewability they introduced caskets out of bamboo, willow, and seagrass. Now they have the largest selection of woven caskets in the United States. There are no toxic finishes, plastic or metal and it is a natural Water Burial Passages Paper Urn Passages International Celebrates 25 Years Continued from Page B1 a funeral director, and he and Crouch talked of the change they saw in the industry. They created Passages International to meet the needs of that change. “At the time, there was not much on the market in the way of biodegradable funeral products,” Crouch says. “We also wanted to provide families declining a permanent urn with a dignified, affordable and eco-friendly option instead of a basic cardproduct that only releases carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water when it burns. “We’ve had tremendous success. Funeral homes have seen an increased revenue up to 30% with a significant increase in customer satisfaction,” Crouch states. A newly launched initiative, Etern.life, comes with every human biodegradable urn and scatter tube allowing families to geo-locate exactly where they scattered the ashes. “In a cemetery, you can walk to the grave and pay respects. With scattering, it’s hard to remember exactly where you scattered and there is often no permanent memorialization,” says Crouch. But with this feature, families will be able to go to the exact location they placed the ashes and visit with their loved one. Passages International also offers water burial options, since scattering over water can be messy. “We have a large selection of products that are meant to float briefly, sink gently, then break down,” says Crouch. They are made from materials such as Himalayan rock salt, molded or recycled paper and clay-like sand and gelatin. Some dissolve within hours, like the clay ones. Others take longer, like the paper ones. “It’s like a leaf falling from a tree. Within several days or weeks it will be gone,” says Crouch. All urns have a feature to utilize the Etern.life Memorial Map, enabling families to upload photos and create an online memorial, in addition to the location of where the ashes were scattered or placed. This information can be linked to the obituary or shared with friends and family. Passages International is both environmentally and socially conscious and many of their products are Green Burial Council and FairTrade certified.
