Tragically, it has claimed the lives of more than 1,300 Kern County, CA residents, for- ever affecting their families, friends and co-workers. But it has also meant loss in other ways: loss of jobs, loss of income, loss of security, loss of person- al connections, and much more. On Thursday, May 6th, the city of Bakersfield in partnership with Green- lawn Funeral Homes and Cemeteries declared a “Day of Healing,” reflecting back on loss of all kinds during the pandemic. Dozens of guests and at- tendees wrote notes with a loved one’s name, or a message about other kinds of loss, and placed it in a time capsule in front of the facility’s Celebration of together as a community they can be- gin to press forward again. Joining in the event were Bakersfield mayor Karen Goh, other elected offi- cials, representatives from local hos- pice organizations and executive staff of Greenlawn. “The loss of a loved one during these past 13 months has been particular- ly painful,” said Greenlawn president Jim La Mar. “Besides the fact that it shouldn’t have happened to begin with, the pandemic has put severe lim- its on a family’s being able to come to- gether at a funeral for emotional sup- port. So, with the mayor’s buy-in we set May 6th as the day to grieve as a community and the time capsule as “a place to lay to rest our fears.” La Mar noted that this will be a per- manent memorial at the cemetery and said he hopes to be able to add many more personal notes to the time capsule over the com- ing months. “Events like these are meant to acknowledge the pain and allow those in grief to move forward. Whether burying a loved one, or symbolically ‘bury- ing’ a beloved memory, it’s so important to the healing process to share one’s loss with others,” added La Mar. Toward the end of the cer- emony, a dozen white doves were handed to the speak- ers and on a count of three, the doves were released, ris- ing as a group into the sky above the crowd. Within seconds, they disappeared from view, like the souls of the departed, flying home. Order Your Favorite Plush Animal with a Funeral Director or Cemeterian Shirt!
