Burke II, and Rachel Neiman with scholarships during a ceremony at Wallace Broadview Funeral Home. This ceremony also honored the life and legacy of the late Gladys E. Wallace and the late VernonWallace , devoted members of the 100 BlackWomen of Funeral Service. Ramos said, “Funeral Service is one of the most respected professions in existence. Being a funeral professional, we show respect for the dead and create memory pictures of the loved ones for families. Los- ing a loved one cre- ates a loss that is not replaceable but see- ing them in a beauti- ful state and no pain or suffering is very re- warding, and makes it worth a million dol- lars. It is my goal to give 100 percent in serving others as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. I will always remember my fu- neral service Oath at graduation and use it as a standard in serving others. I will always give 150 percent and be trustworthy, honest, and caring to the families I serve and have a good work ethic, integrity and respect for the dead. I’m excited to serve other and look forward to representing the core values of the profession learned at Malcolm X College.” Burke’s goal is to open a business that can be handed down to his family thus creating a legacy of generational wealth. Mortuary sci- ence is a career that he had given much con- sideration and he is sure this is his life path. This is about building a great funeral legacy for his family and his children. Burke under- stands the increasing value and benefits of community service and civic engagement. He is currently do- ing that through his connections with his Kappa Alpha Psi Fra- ternity and Sister So- rorities with work- shops, school supplies donations, and medical services, and mentor- ing male youth and he plans to continuing his efforts as a funeral service professional. Born in Phoenix AZ, Neiman traveled across the nation and around the world teach- ing English as a second language but realized she needed a professional change in her life. Teaching restricted her life and did not give her the lift that she need- ed to make a mark. She was discouraged by others to become a mortician and it was the dream as a youth that discouraged her but the realiza- tion had her start re- searching the indus- try. The more she dug she discovered it gave her a feeling of excite- ment and passion. Neiman saw her potential and she celebrates her mark to eventually be- come a licensed funeral director and licensed embalmer. With a GPA of 3.9 her potential has her moving in the right direction. Neiman has found her greatest potential in the funeral industry as a student at Malcolm X College.
