Frank “Buddy” Doleman: Serving the Industry for Over 50 Years Delphia and Frank Stanley Doleman Jr Buddy Sandblasting 1967 Buddy and his father American Cemetery Supplies Building PORTSMOUTH,VA— Frank Stanley Doleman Jr, known as Buddy to his close family and friends is to be recognized for his lifelong contributions to the funeral industry. Born and raised in Portsmouth, VA, he is the third child of Frank Doleman Sr and Ruby Baker Doleman. As a young child, he inherited his father’s ambitious drive that has followed him throughout his life and career. Buddy was first introduced to the funeral industry by his father. In 1962, he began working at his father’s business, Doleman’s Memorial. However, his time working there was cut short due to being sent to El Paso, TX for military basic training. After his deployment was over, he returned to Portsmouth and he began working at the family business with his father. Not much later Buddy married his childhood sweetheart Delphia Skaggs. Buddy’s father, knowing Buddy would eventually take over the business, decided it was time that he was trained in sandblasting, sculpting stones, and engraving. This is when he realized he had the talent for this line of work. In 1969 Buddy applied to be a fire fighter at Portsmouth fire department and worked both jobs simultaneously. A couple years later after Buddy and Del began to have kids of their own, it was time to take over the family business. He resigned from the fire department and worked at the memorial company full time with his father and brother, Benny. Deciding he should expand the business he purchased a local cemetery in hopes of getting a new community of customers. This business move became very successful and caused him to build a burial vault company alongside the business. He then realized the need in the industry for a funeral/cemetery supply business. He sold the cemetery and vault business to pursue his idea of a customer service-based cemetery and funeral supply company.
