Rikkers Now.” These are the first words of Morning Leaves, an upcoming poetry collection authored by Laing F. Rikkers in the wake of her younger sister Ginna’s untimely death due to the repercussions of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a frequently undiagnosed medical condition that causes people to stop breathing during sleep and can lead to a range of cardiovascular and other health issues. Rikkers is a leader in the field of OSA as an investor in and cofounder of a medical device company that treats patients with OSA. “I was immediately struck by the searing irony,” she writes in an essay introducing Morning Leaves. “My company had treated thousands of people, yet I failed to help her.” Despite the urgency that can be read in her opening dedication, Rikkers’s collection draws peaceful respite for herself and her readers. Through her reflective poetry, Rikkers carves a path towards healing through counseling, art, and connection with the natural world. Her free-flowing, accessible work serves to guide readers hoping to do the same. Accompanying Rikkers’s deeply felt poems are breathtaking drawings from naturalist illustrator Kelly Leahy Radding. Morning Leaves is an insightful, honest examination of what it means to grieve the loss of a loved one. Rikkers’s vulnerable, evocative, and ultimately hopeful poems invite readers to join her as she continues to heal, and her work is the perfect gift or self-purchase for readers who find themselves facing a death in their own lives. Museum Corner www.NMFH.org The National Museum of Funeral History, America’s most extensive collection of authentic funeral service artifacts, proudly presented its eighteenth permanent exhibit, “The Most Famous Burial of All Time: The Shroud of Turin” on April 27, 2023. The exhibit features a certified copy of the Shroud from the Archdiocese of Turin. The 14foot linen cloth bears the image of a man, which millions believe depicts Jesus of Nazareth. Owned by the Dukes of Savoy (former ruling family of Italy) until the late 1980s, the original Shroud is now the property of the Catholic Church and has been permanently kept in Turin, Italy, since 1578. The body was washed and anointed with a wide variety of fragrances to mask odors and purify the body. Objects such as coins were placed over the eyes to keep them closed during the onset of rigor mortis. The face was covered with a special cloth and the hands and feet were tied with strips of cloth prior to being wrapped in a shroud prior to entombment or burial. Over the next three days, relatives would visit the tomb to ensure death had occurred. “The Shroud of Turin has been wrapped in mystery and intrigue for centuries,” explained Genevieve Keeney-Vazquez, National Museum of Funeral History President/CEO and curator of this exhibit. “This captivating exhibit allows visitors to draw their Genevieve Keeney-Vazquez FUNERAL HOME & CEMETERY NEWS www.NomisPublications.com Monthly Columnsonline at The National Museum of Funeral History houses the country’s largest collection of funeral service artifacts and features renowned exhibits on one of man’s oldest cultural customs.
