He joined his father, Robert S. McColaugh, in the family business, McCo- laugh Funeral Home, which was established in 1960. After his fa- ther’s passing, he assumed owner- ship and continued to operate it as president. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1970. EDDIE FOSTER ROBERTS of Bay City, TX died March 15, 2020 at the age of 97. He was a funeral director and morti- cian at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home. It was re- ported that Mr. Roberts was the first Texan to succumb to Covid-19. STEPHEN G. TIRPAK of Cleve- land, OH died March 12, 2020 at the age of 82. He began working at Chambers Funeral Home in 1964, receiving his fu- neral directors licenses in 1966. He graduated with a degree in mortuary science from the Uni- versity of Dayton and was a mem- ber of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association and the Cuyahoga Fu- neral Directors Association. RICHARDA. “DICK”WHETSTONE of Vandalia, OH died March 10, 2020 at the age of 78. He worked alongside his wife, Barbara in owning and op- erating the Morton & Whet- stone Funeral Home for over fifty years. EARLE F. COOK JR. of Attle- boro, MA died March 24, 2020 at the age of 92. He was the proud owner of the Cook Fu- neral Home in Attleboro for more than thirty years, until his retirement. A graduate of New England Institute in Boston, he also founded the Widow to Widow program in Attleboro. JOHN HARRIS HUDSON of Troy, AL died March 26, 2020 at the age of 53. With a funeral service career spanning over 30 years, he most recently was man- ager of the Green Hills Funeral Home in Troy. He received his degree in Mortuary Science from Jefferson State Junior College . HENRY CRILL MERRYDAY, JR. of Tallahassee, FL died February 23, 2020 at age 93. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Em- balming in 1949 and went on to become certified as a licensed fu- neral director by the State of Flori- da. He then worked with his uncle in the family business, T.J. Beggs Funeral Home in Madison, FL. KEVIN K. O’SULLIVAN of Bel- Nor, MO died April 4, 2020 at the age of 69. He worked in the family business from an ear- ly age for his father and uncle at O’Sullivan-Muckle Mortuary in Jennings, MO, eventually earn- ing his license and degree in Fu- neral Service. After the deaths of his uncle and father in 1992, Kev- in moved the business to Chester- field, MO where he operated O’Sullivan-Muckle Mortuary until 2017. He moved his business into the Ortmann-Sti- panovich Funeral Home where he finished his career with the help of Tom Ortmann and Mike Stipanovich . THOMAS H. MCCARTHY of Buffalo, NY died March 10, 2020 at the age of 85. He found- ed the Thomas H. McCarthy Funeral Home in South Buf- falo in 1957 and in 1994 a sec- ond location was added in West Seneca. A 1956 graduate of the Simmons School of Mortuary Sci- ence, he served as president of the Erie-Niagara Funeral Direc- tors Association, chairman of the NewYork State Funeral Di- rectors Association’s advisory board and was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association. SAMUEL LINTON TOLBERT of Clarkesville, GA died February 5, 2020 at the age of 72. A graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science , in 1977, he and his wife, Martha , founded Hillside Me- morial Chapel Funeral Home in Clarkesville. He later devel- oped a perpetual care cemetery, Hillside Gardens , adjacent to the funeral home. He served as president of the Independent Funeral Directors of Georgia in 2009 and was a member of the Past Presidents Club. O’NEIL D. SWANSON of Detroit, MI died March 27, 2020 at the age of 86. He attended Cincinna- ti College of Mortuary Science , grad- uating cum laude in 1956, and subsequently passing the Nation- al Conference of Funeral Services Examiners Board. Two years later, Swanson founded Swanson Fu- neral Homes, Inc . in Detroit. He was a former trustee of the National Foundation of Funeral Service , past treasurer of Michigan Selected Funeral Directors Asso- ciation and board member of the Detroit and National Funeral Directors and Morticians Associations , where he previously served as District Governor of the 4th District of the NFD&MA, Inc. Co-founder of ROAD – a group of distinguished lead- ers in the funeral industry which recently celebrated 37 years of leadership excellence, Dr. Swanson was recently recognized as a 2020 Living Legend by the 100 Black Women of Funeral Service Hall of Fame. His over 60 years of leadership at the fu- neral home was marked by their high-profile funerals as well as their philanthropy and community focus. WARREN H. RILES, CFSP , of Forestville, NY died March 20, 2020, at the age of 79. A 1968 graduate of Pittsburgh In- stitute of Mortuary Science , he was a licensed funeral director in both New York and Pennsylva- nia. He purchased the former Hole-Parker Funeral Cha- pel in Forestville in 1970, and changed the name to Riles Fu- neral Home . He was currently president of Riles & Woolley, Inc ., Forestville, which co-owns Riles & Woolley Funeral Home and Riles & Woolley Monuments . He also served as a Chautau- qua County Coroner for 41 years, retiring in 2018, and served as Chief Coroner for the last 9 years JAMES ROBERT “BOB”MORRIS of Dayton, OH died March 28, 2020 at the age of 88. He was the third generation of his family at Morris Sons Funer- al Homes where he worked for over 50 years. A 1955 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Service , he was also past Secre- tary-Treasurer of the Greater Montgomery County Funeral Directors Association and a mem- ber of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association . DOROTHY E. DAY of Toledo, OH died March 28, 2020 at the age of 93. She and her husband, the late James Day , founded The House of Day Funeral Service in Toledo in 1964. A Licensed Funeral Director since 1969, she oversaw the construction of a new facility in 1990. Her leg- acy continues through her fami- ly of funeral directors: her children, Cassandra Moore and Michael Day, Sr ., grandson, Michael Day, II , and daugh- ter ‐ in ‐ law, Alison Day . She was a member of the National , Ohio , and Northwest Ohio Funeral Directors Associations . MARK LENARD JUSTEN of McHenry, IL died March 29, 2020 at the age of 66. Graduat- ing from Worsham College of Mortu- ary Science in 1976, Mark worked as the fourth generation at the George R. Justen & Son Fu- neral Home in McHenry. In 1983, he installed a crematory, serving funeral homes in the area. In 1985, Mark purchased the Wonder Lake Funeral Home , and in 1989, he purchased the Round Lake Funeral Home . After 125 years, the fu- neral home was relocated in 2008 and renamed the Justen Funeral Home & Crematory . In the 1980s, Mark began serving with the Illinois Disaster Response Team through the Illinois Funeral Directors Association . After its merger with the federal Disaster-Mortuary Operational Response Team (D- MORT), Mark was activated to serve on the response teams for several major fatality incidents, such as Hurricane Katrina, American Eagle Flight 4184 crash, and the Bourbonnais train derailment, as well as the World Trade Center terrorist attack on 9/11/2001. He was deployed to NYC, where he worked in Logistics Management for the Office of Chief Medical Ex- aminer, where he helped with the receiving and intake of the victims’ remains. He assisted in setting up the ancillary offices (where he earned the name “Mayor of 30 th Street”); inventory management and multiple other duties, including assisting in setting up Memorial Park which stored the victims’ remains. PASTOR TONI MARTIN of In- dianapolis, IN died April 10, 2020 at the age of 66. She was a certified Grief Counselor, Grief Ministry Director and Consultant, most recently with Sprowl Funeral Home and had previously worked for Blu- itt and Son Funeral Home and Williams and Bluitt Fu- neral Homes in Indianapolis. She was also National Executive Exhibit Director for the 100 Black Women of Funeral Service, Inc . CHARLES H. FARWELL, JR. of Nashua, NHdiedMarch 19, 2020 at the age of 93. A second-genera- tion funeral director, he joined his father at Farwell Funeral Service in 1949 and served as the execu- tive director of the funeral home for over 50 years. A 1950 gradu- ate of New England Institute of Anat- omy, Sanitary Sciences, Embalming and Funeral Directing in Boston, he held membership the National Funeral Directors Association and the New Hampshire Funeral Directors Association and was a trustee of Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashua for over 50 years.
