The Home of Eternity Cemetery is one of the first Jewish institutions in the east bay. Established in 1865 with a small, two-acre Jewish cemetery within the larger Moun- tain View Cemetery, it has served the entire east bay Jewish community–many of Oak- land’s prominent Jewish historical figures are buried there. In 1875, the same people who established Home of Eternity Cemetery founded the first Hebrew congregation of Oakland, now known as Temple Sinai. Sinai Memorial Chapel Chevra Kadisha is the only Jewish funeral home between Los Angeles and Seattle and was incorporated as a religious, non-profit, organization in Contemporary Bay Area Jewish Institutions Join Forces Continued on Page A16 Two Historic and 1902. It is also the only not-for-profit Jew- ish funeral home in the country that serves the entire spectrum of the Jewish commu- nity, whether affiliated with a community or synagogue, or not, and providing its ser- vices regardless of a family’s financial means. Temple Sinai senior rabbi Jacqueline Mates-Muchin said, “Since Temple Sinai’s inception, our leadership has played a dual role as both congregational leaders and guard- ians of the cemetery. We have shouldered the full responsibility for the operation, manage- ment and maintenance of Home of Eterni- ty, even though the cemetery serves the entire Jewish community, not just Temple Sinai. We take great pride in the fact that we have cared for this sacred place in east bay Jewish life and history for over 150 years.” Susan Morris, president of Sinai Me- morial Chapel stated, “We consider it an honor and privilege to assume the guard- ianship of Home of Eternity Cemetery.
