It all began when Frank W. Flanner , Indiana’s first licensed embalmer, opened his storefront funeral es- tablishment on North Illinois Street in the heart of Indianapolis. Those were tough financial times for the Flanner family. Frank’s widowed mother was running a boarding house to support the family after Frank’s father died in the Civil War. However, Frank was able to launch his funeral business with the help of money from his father’s Civil War pension.
