It had been relocated to a rear por- tion of the cemetery when the gatehouse was built in 1923, and the opportunity for restoration came when the 1920s replace- ment was destroyed by a truck. Flaherty Iron Works in Alexandria restored the heavy wrought iron gate, expanding it both side- ways and vertically to accommodate larg- er vehicles. Two pedestrian gates were also added to each side, and the gate is careful- ly balanced on ball bearings for easy open- ing and closing. Oldtowne Landscaping of Frederick, MD completed a cobblestone road and installed a new herringbone pat- terned brick driveway and sidewalks. Fun- draising for the $175,000 installation took two years, and the project was designed by Moody Landscaping of Washington, DC. Founded in 1807 and home to over 160 Congressmen and their families, Historic Congressional Cemetery is owned by Christ Church but operated by a non-profit.
