But how are children across the globe dealing with the effects of this deadly illness? A young girl named Cora, age 9, was struggling with the loneliness and fear associated with COVID-19. She felt like many other kids her age. She knew about the virus from the TV news and from the whispered discussions of her parents. But what she no- ticed most was how corona- virus was affecting her life. She couldn’t go to school or see her friends anymore. She often had to stay at home and when she did go out, she had to wear a mask and keep distant from everyone. How could she cope with these sud- den, strange changes in her life? Other children may grow nervous, anxious, or fearful. But Cora grew upset and even angry. Her best friend Allorah only lived a block away, and yet she couldn’t play with her. Cora’s mother, Christine, says that the situa- tion made Cora cry. “She was pissed off that she couldn’t see her friends.” Cora went out on the deck, and Christine could hear her out there, just talking. She watched her daughter come in and begin digging through the recyclables, their dog, Gizzy, jumped into the bin to help. “I asked her, ‘Who were you talking to out- side?,’” Christine says. Cora replied “The dog!” Cora proceeded to craft homemade musical instru- ments out of bottles, cans, and other materials, then she began to reach out to neighbors through song and music. Gizzy had inspired her to communicate to those around her. His little bark had attracted the re- turning deep barks from Great Danes in the house be- hind them. And this form of communication, through the air and across the yards, had triggered an idea. “Carefully staying away is the key to being corona free” became the chorus of a song that floated through the neighborhood. Voices sang back. Cora received encouraging words to continue to reach out. She was connecting individuals who were otherwise alone, just like she felt. She was bringing a solution to a problem that is affecting the whole world. Cora has plans to spread her song and the hope it brings to as many people as she can. And she’s doing just that. Cora’s mother, Christine Dernederlanden C.B.T., C.T.S.S., is a humanitarian in the field of grief and trauma as well as an award-winning author, professional speaker, coach, and holds certification in bereavement trauma and trau- ma services specialist. She saw Cora’s reaction to COVID-19 as the perfect opportunity to reach out to others and help chil- dren cope with the stress and anxiety the disease is causing. Christine has a history helping others deal with trauma and grief. In fact, she herself has had to come face-to-face with grief after the death of her brother when she was only 14-years-old. In 1986, Christine’s 19-year-old brother Robert jumped over a fence at Niagara Falls late at night. He thought he was jump- ing into a grassy spot, but it was actually the tops of trees. He died in a very traumatic way, and Christine was obviously greatly affected by his death. “I thought it’d be like a hamster. You bury it in the backyard and never think about it again. I bottled it up.” But soon she began forgetting things, even her own name. She was having comprehension problems in school. “My life changed completely. It was not like a hamster.” Continued on Page A23 CORRECTION In the September print issue of Funeral Home & Cemetery News on page B11 we mistakenly attributed a quote to Thomas L. Ryan, CEO of SCI in the article “AFTR Launches New Death Care Category: Cemetery Cameras to Enable Virtual Visits and Constant Connection.” This quote is not factually correct and should not have been attributed to Thomas L. Ryan.
