ATLANTIC,IA— The owners and staff at Roland Funeral Service are on the verge of a major milestone, the family’s 100th year serving the families of Atlantic, Iowa and sur- rounding areas. According to a history of the business from a News Telegraph story when the business celebrated its 85th Anniversary, the J.L. Winne Furniture and Un- dertaking Company located at 315 Chestnut Street was estab- lished in 1900. Henry Baxter and Jack Peacock purchased the business in 1916, naming it the Peacock and Baxter Furniture and Undertaking Company . Burdette L. Roland was em- ployed by Baxter and Peacock as a funeral director and embalm- er. Roland received his license in 1916, and had worked in Sac City, Oskaloosa, Boone and Ames be- fore coming to Atlantic in 1919. Roland purchased half interest in the business, and the name changed to Roland-Peacock and Baxter. They moved the business to the current location at Fifth and Elm Streets, building one of Iowa’s first actual funeral home buildings, featuring a chapel, private family room and modern preparation room for the care of the bodies. In 1935, a north addi- tion was added provid- ing more space for fu- neral seating, visitation rooms and a music room. In that same year Bur- dette designed a cemetery tent which was manufac- tured by the Steril Man- ufacturing Company of Omaha. Today Steril is recognized nationally as a manufacturer of tents.
