It doesn’t have to be a classic car, just an old car. Unlike many of my friends, I’m not into muscle cars. My interests are in the mid-century, and range from late 1930s through the early 1960s. I love the oversized, art deco cars of the fifties. I also love the round- ed fenders and running boards of the 30’s and 40’s. So you can imagine my delight when a 1953 Packard Hearse was posted for sale on HearseHub. I was even more delighted when I discovered it was a Henney- Packard Junior Hearse. I didn’t even know there was such a hearse. If you’re like me and unfamiliar with this vehicle, it is a unique vehicle that was produced for a very short time in the mid-1950s. The Packard Junior was based on the Packard Clipper body and had their 288 CI L-head straight eight engine which was reported to produce 135HP. The wheelbase is 127 inches making it 29 inches shorter than the full- size Packard Hearse. Even with its short wheelbase, it was used as both an ambulance and a hearse, designed and built for funeral homes on a budget. At first appearance you might think it’s a station wag- on, but then you notice the upper rear portion and re- Mike Jamar is founder and co-owner of Advanced Integration Technology. It’s taller and has the look of a professional vehicle. You might notice the chrome trim on the rear fender and the curved glass on the rear quarter panel. This is what I like about the mid-centu- ry vehicles: the design nuances. For me this car is an excellent professional show car. It’s a unique example of a hearse and unlike most, it fits in a reg- ular sized garage. They are also rare as the Packard Junior was only built in 1953 and 1954 with a total of 500 built. Plus, half of that production was sold to the government. The one on HearseHub is a 1953 Henney-Packard Ju- nior with around 100,000 miles and runs well. The Inte- rior has been restored, but the exterior is original. It has al- ways been stored inside and has new tires and brakes. “The hearse originally came from a funeral home in Rochester, MN, and was also used as an ambulance. We acquired it from the Willoughby Funeral Home in How- ard, SD, many years ago and later acquired the funer- al home as well. We have used it on several services and many parades, including Prairie Village. We were asked to use it for a funeral in Minnesota because the deceased had learned to drive in a Packard, and always loved them. It accommodates a full-size casket and we will include our original wicker removal basket, if the buyer is interest- ed,” from the owner, Bob Ellsworth, semi-retired, Ells- worth Funeral Home, Madison, SD, 605-270-1050.
