The winners are Tracie Jean Tweet and Bruce Walter Badoni. This scholarship is sponsored by Batesville Casket Company and was created to meet the educa- tional needs of the increas- ing number of second-ca- reer professionals entering independent funeral service seeking positions as funeral directors, embalmers and future leaders. Tracie Jean Tweet, en- rolled in the College of Mortuary Science at Amer- ican River College in Sacra- mento, CA, will graduate in August 2018. Current- ly employed at Chapel of the Hills in Auburn, CA, Tweet is committed to working for a funeral home that truly focuses on service to families. Tweet comes to the funeral service profes- sion after working 10 years in hospital and healthcare administration. “When a good friend of mine died, I found myself in the role of advocate and funeral coordinator,” said Tweet. “I fell into my call- ing and now I am so lucky to finally be able to say that I love what I do.” Bruce Walter Badoni, a full-time student at the Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, will graduate in August 2018. He is cur- rently employed at Smith- Miner Funeral Home in Midland, MI. Badoni spent the last 8 years work- ing in the healthcare field as a Nurse’s Aide and as an Emergency Medical Tech- nician-Paramedic. “The ultimate goal for me is to own my own funer- al home,” said Badoni. “It will be a family-oriented funeral home that focuses on providing the best cus- tomer service as humanly possible for both the care of the decedent and their families.” Since the award was first launched in late 2010, the board of trustees have awarded 35 Second-Career Scholarships to deserving individuals seeking a career in funeral service. The Sec- ond-Career Scholarship is one of several programs of the Selected Educational founded in 1917. By creat- ing the program, the Trust hopes to attract and assist future practitioners inter- ested in entering the pro- fession.
