Developed in accordance with American National Standards Insti- tute (ANSI) guidelines, the rigorous and voluntary ANSI/NSC 373 stan- dard establishes criteria to determine the degree to which natural dimen- sion stone is extracted and manufac- tured sustainably. Following facility inspections by NSF International’s sustainability di- vision, which develops standards and conducts audits to protect the environ- ment, the Milbank operations received certification for all quarry operations at the location as well as the on-site processing facility. The Milbank oper- ation produces Carnelian® and Prairie Brown varieties of granite. This mate- rial has been used on projects through- out the country with some of the no- table projects including the FDR Memorial in Washington, DC, Den- ver Union Station in Denver, CO, and the Banks (Smale Riverfront Park) in Cincinnati, OH, among many others. “We’re enormously proud of our quarry and operations staff at Milbank as well as the Coldspring Sustainabil- ity Committee’s efforts toward obtain- ing ANSI/NSC 373 Gold certifica- tion. The perception of many in the A&D community is that we are not good stewards of the land we manage. Certification to this standard helps us tell our story in a credible way,” says Kathy Spanier , Coldspring’s Director of Marketing. “Coldspring has a long history of sustainable quarrying and manufacturing practices and is one of the only providers of certified sustain- able stone in the world. Our most re- cent third-party-verified certification for our Milbank operation confirms our commitment to be the world’s greenest stone company.” The ANSI/NSC 373 standard showcases our existing best practices in numerous areas of extraction and processing of natural stone, such as: water usage and recycling, custody and transportation of the stone, site management, land reclamation, cor- porate governance, energy optimi- zation, management of excess pro- cess materials and solid waste, safer chemical and materials management, worker health and safety and option- al innovation credits. Certification is based on point totals in each catego- ry to achieve a bronze, silver, gold or platinum level certification. In 2016, Coldspring’s corporate headquarters and primary manufac- turing operations in Cold Spring, received Gold certification; the Charcoal (St. Cloud, MN), Mesabi (Babbitt, MN), and Rockville (Rock- ville, MN) quarries received Plati- num certification. Since 1898, Coldspring has served the architectural, memorial, residential and industrial markets with all types of nat- ural stone, bronze, and industrial and diamond-tooling products. With head- quarters, a primary manufacturing facil- ity and bronze foundry in Cold Spring, Minn., the company has 900 employees at operations across the country, includ- ing 30 quarries and additional fabrica- tion facilities. In 2016, the company’s headquarters, primary manufacturing operations and three Minnesota-based quarries received ANSI/NSC 373 Sus- tainable Production of Natural Dimen- sion Stone certification. Coldspring’s in-house services and support such as drafting, design, BIM, and project and construction management contribute to creating unique customer solutions. The fellowship provides funds for research at the Lloyd Li- brary on the topics of botany, natural history, early travel and exploration, and the history of science, medicine and pharmacy. The research will result in projects that bring wider awareness and original perspectives to the history and use of plants. Imperi’s project focuses on the intersection of eth- nobotany—the study of the relationship between plants and people—and thanatol- ogy—the study of death and dying. The project is titled “Rooted in Death, Growing in Grief.” Plants and herbs have been used for centuries in the care of the dying and those griev- ing a loss. Teas, tinctures, salves and even plants grown near the home have been part of traditions in- cluding shamanism, Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medi- cine and Appalachian culture to assist the dying and their loved ones. Over the course of her fellowship at the Lloyd Library, Imperi will gather information around the inter- section of plants and death and share it through a scholarly paper, workshop and lecture. Imperi’s public-facing work includes the podcast, Life, Death & Tarot and frequent public speaking appearances. Cole Im- peri is owner of Doth , a resource publisher and consulting firm focusing on businesses in the death and dying space. She is also co-owner of Dead Ringers , a deathcare-focused da- ta-driven mystery phone shopping company. To learn more about the project, visit www.AmericanThanatologist.com. Cole, a dual-certified thanatologist, has a contagious pas- sion to enrich life through the study of death and dying. She holds a post-graduate Certificate in Typeface Design from the Cooper Union, is a Certified Crematory Opera- tor and a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher. Cole was ap- pointed by the City of Covington, Kentucky to the Board of Overseers of Historic Linden Grove Cemetery and Ar- boretum and serves on the board of a green burial ceme- tery—Heritage Acres—in Cincinnati, OH. She is teaching faculty for the ICCFA Cremation Arranger Certification program.
