A funeral director, business owner, lawyer and judge, he was described as a “remarkable humanitarian and standard bearer for jus- tice for all.” The Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation serves 15 counties in South Caro- lina. Among its mission is to prevent the growth of heir’s property (HP) by conduct- ing educational seminars on HP issues and resolution and forest management, provid- ing the full array of legal services to help HP clients resolve their HP landowner- ship issues to clear title to family land; and to provide sustainable forestry education, technical assistance and resources. Bernard Fielding, CEO of Fielding Home for Funerals , one of South Carolina’s larg- est and oldest black-owned funeral homes, proudly notes he literally grew up in the family business. He knew he wanted to be a funeral director, but he also had grown up in an environment that emphasized hard work and public service. In addition to working in the family business, Judge Fielding chose to serve the community as a lawyer. He gradu- ated from Hampton Institute in 1953, spent two years in the army and, while stationed in Boston, he completed law school at Bos- ton University in 1958. In 1976, he was appointed Associate Probate Judge in Charleston County, be- coming the first African American to hold that position in the state. In 1990 he again stepped into history books as the first Af- rican American elected as Charleston County Probate Judge. Bernard Fielding is an iconic civil rights activist, businessman and leader. He and his family have put community service first, not only in funeral service but as community servants. For more than 50 years Judge Fielding offered free servic- es to the YWCA of Greater Charleston, which his grandmother co-founded. In 1969, he became the first black president of the Young Democrats of Charleston County. He also taught extensively about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and – what he refers to as the most powerful legisla- tion – the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Fielding Home for Funerals has served the Charleston community for more than 100 years and was inducted in the NFDMA/100BWFS “African American Funeral Service History Museum Hall of Fame” in August 2017. Judge Fielding says his work is still not done, and he will always serve the people of Charleston.
