Guests Bob and Ju- lia Prout from Prout Funeral Home in Verona, NJ share how green funerals can be a meaningful option for anyone want- ing to say goodbye in a beautiful, natu- ral setting while also reducing their en- vironmental footprint. As leaders in the green funeral space, Bob, co-owner and senior director of the funeral home, and the staff have established Prout Funeral Home as the premier provider of green funerals in the Northern New Jersey area and as a national leader in sustainable fu- neral practices. “Not long ago, green funerals were a rel- atively foreign concept, but, increasingly, families are choosing this eco-friendly ap- proach when laying a loved one to rest,” said Christine Pepper, CEO, NFDA. “Our April Remembering A Life podcast episode – released just in time for Earth Day – is a perfect listen for anyone who would like to learn more about natural burial options.” According to a 2020 consumer study conducted by NFDA, nearly 40 percent of people would be interested in exploring green funeral options because of potential environmental benefits. There are many “shades” of green possi- ble when planning a green funeral or natu- ral burial. Based on a family’s preferences, Recruiting capable, focused profession- als into available funeral service and death- care positions has become easier thanks to a landmark partnership between the Fu- neral Service Foundation and the IC- CFA Educational Foundation. The orga- nizations teamed up to launch the Journey to Serve initiative, designed to connect military veterans with careers throughout the funeral service profession. Journey to Serve’s purpose is twofold: The sweeping initiative—which was fund- ed equally by both organizations and en- dorsed by NFDA and ICCFA —positions the funeral service profession as an ideal career path for military veterans to deploy the skills, traits, and talents acquired and earned during their tour of duty. At the same time, the initiative equips deathcare and funeral service professionals with free tools and resources specifically designed to engage with military veterans on a local, regional, national, and international scale. “Military veterans embody the same strength of character that so often de- fines funeral service and deathcare pro- fessionals; connecting veterans with our mission-driven work was a natural fit,” said Foundation Chair Anthony Guer- ra and ICCFA Educational Foundation President Jim Price in a joint statement. “Finding and retaining skilled, reliable, and compassionate staff benefits the entire funeral service profession, and we knew that our organizations working together would create the synergy necessary to help get the job done.” The Funeral Service Foundation and the ICCFA Educational Foundation will also award two $5,000 academic scholarships to military veterans to help offset the costs a funeral director may be able to help with funeral home services, cemetery capabili- ties, and information about local rules and regulations. A green funeral incorporates environment-friendly options and may include any or all of the following: no em- balming or embalming with formalde- hyde-free products; the use of sustainable biodegradable clothing, shroud or casket; using recycled paper products; serving or- ganic food (if food may be served in a fu- neral home in the state); locally-grown or- ganic flowers; funeral guest carpooling; as well as a natural or green burial. Remembering A Life Book Club’s Book of the Month Goes “Green” The Remembering A Life Book Club Book of the Month for April was Nature Heals: Reconciling Your Grief Through En- gaging with the Natural World by Dr. Alan Wolfelt. The annual schol- arships are equally funded by both organi- zations. A third scholarship, the Hunter M. Harbeson Memorial Scholarship, will provide $2,500 in academic support to a qualified veteran. All scholarship applica- tions open in September 2021. The foundations are working with the Fu- neral Service Association of Canada (FSAC) to roll out Canadian-specific materials this summer. More information about the ex- citing joint initiative is forthcoming. Hundreds of funeral service profession- als came together in April for a live virtual kick-off event, hosted by Bob Arrington, founder and president of Arrington Fu- neral Directors in Jackson, Tennessee, and Jay Dodds, President/COO of Park Lawn Corporation, headquartered in To- ronto. Lisa Rosser, CEO of The Value of a Veteran, delivered a keynote entitled “Re- gard, Recruit, Retain: 5 Reasons That Hir- ing Veterans Makes Good Business Sense – And How to Find Great Hires.” Jim Price and Funeral Service Foundation Ex- ecutive Director, Lee Wiensch shared the comprehensive resources, which are now available at www.JourneyToServe.com.
