This monu- ment perpetuates the mem- ory of the men and women who lived, died and served their country during these wars. The original cost was $3,500, which was contrib- uted by 500 local residents. It was commissioned by the Lone Fir Cemetery As- sociation, designed by D.D. Neer and built by Otto Schumann. Lone Fir is an historic cemetery adminis- tered by Metro, the regional government agency in the greater Portland area. Metro operates 14 historic cemeteries in the region. Lone Fir is one of the oldest historic cem- eteries in the state, and is located in inner southeast Portland, one of the most dense- ly populated parts of the state. The cemetery functions as an historic park and attracts a large, diverse group of visitors year-round. Design is expected to begin in the sum- mer of 2019 and the project will be com- pleted by September 2020. Visit our website at www.nomispublications.com PORTLAND,OR— Metro’s Historic Cemeteries program has been awarded a State Veterans andWar Memorials Grant fromOregon State Parks and Rec- reation for improvements at the Soldiers Monument at Lone Fir Cemetery. The grant will go towards repairing and widening the existing concrete pad around the monument as well as adding a new con- crete walkway to make the space more welcoming and accessible by both wheels and feet. This project restores a piece of national and Ore- gon history and gives greater access to the commu- nity at large. The Soldiers’ Monument was unveiled in 1903 to honor soldiers of the Civil, Spanish-
