Every part of me screams no , I cannot imagine it. COVID-19 will bring expo- nentially more pain to people’s grief than almost anything this country and world have ever seen. You know this. As I write this, you are plan- ning and directing funeral and graveside ser- vices in ways that you have never done before. Creating ways to help people comfort one an- other that align with “stay at home” and “at least 6 feet apart.” The saddest part is that each new question and challenge that COVID-19 brings to you is another way that COVID-19 adds more pain and sadness to grief. In the first days of April our government predicts cases will spike soon and warns that these may be our country’s saddest times be- cause deaths are going to spike too. Almost ev- ery state is under the mandate to stay at home. People on the frontlines of healthcare need more PPEs and ventilators. The number of hotspots continue to rise. Trillions of dollars are rolling out in hopes that they will prevent a recession or worse and unemployment contin- ues to rise. Each of these combine to bring our country, communities, families and people an immeasurable amount of stress. You know that grief brings a pain that can feel like your heart is physically breaking in the best of times. In these times, grief also comes with the addition of fear, the economy, and isolation. Can you imagine what not being able to com- fort your mom, hold her hand, or be with her heart aches because every person grieving during social distanc- ing will have the additional pain COVID-19 inflicts, even when life gets back to normal. Outreach, grief support, and aftercare have always been some of the most important services that you give to your families and community. They are ex- In 2000 Kristan Dean began working with her family to bring Merry Christmas From Heaven ® to all who need the gifts’ message of Comfort, Love, and Faith. Today she is the Vice President of Marketing and one of the primary mem- bers of her family’s Bereavement Ministry.   Thanks, in great part, to the thousands of funeral directors and retailers nationwide who make Merry Christmas From Heaven ® a part of their communities, countless numbers of families reach out to their family every year. Their bereave- ment ministry helps families realize that those in Heaven live forever in our hearts. Their love is with us always.    Prior to Mooney TunCo, Inc. Kristan worked with com- panies nationwide helping them build revenues by creating greater sales opportunities through the use of sales intelli- gence and marketing alignment. I pray this is impossible for you. Though a part of me knows that you may be walking with this grief yourself and that I cannot fathom how many of you are helping families that know the stress of this pain intimately. When this is published, Mother’s Day will be approaching. I pray this means there are no new COVID-19 cases or deaths and the surge never happened. All of me wants to write like that is true and understands that it may not be. My ponentially more important now and at any other time I might beg you to please do more. Not this time. Right now, I feel like you are already doing way more with far less than you have in almost any other time. This time I am asking: who is support- ing you? Are you connecting with pro- fessionals and people that are able to give you emotional support and hands that can help? As much as you want to help the families and communities you serve please take special care of yourself. No one is immune to the stress and pain grief can bring. Please be kind to yourself, check in, ask yourself: am I ok? Fit “take care of me” time into your day. If you can’t, please ask yourself, what would I do, if someone I love said I have no time to take care of me, too many people need me? Then do that for yourself. If you are in one of the lucky places on this planet that COVID-19 is spar- ing and your families and community are mostly ok please think about who you can reach out to. Say hi, listen to what is said and not said, and provide concrete ways to help. To all of you that have aftercare tools and ways that bring families and communities to- gether (during social distancing or af- ter), or if you have ideas or events you are planning that will make grieving easier, please reach out and share them with everyone that you can.
