Thornton Funeral Home Continues with Third Generation PARKSLEY,VA— Harry Wen- dell Thornton began his funeral service career in 1947. In 1967 he and his wife, Gertrude Lew- is Thornton had a vision. They wanted to serve the families of Parksley courteously and sin- cerely in a cost effective manner. Renovations to secure that vi- sion began at the former Upshur Lewis residence. Following Wen- dell’s untimely death in 1968, Gertrude faithfully continued the business under the guidance of funeral director, Barton D. Holland III. In 1982, upon his graduation from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Carl U. Thorn- ton and his wife, Shelley joined the firm as the second generation. The Thornton legacy of funeral service providers continues with Sarah ElizabethThornton Laird, the third generation now active in providing care to families. Located in historic Parksley, Thornton Funeral Home is the oldest existing funeral home in the city offering service to residents of the Eastern Shore. The stately 1920 Victorian home on the corner of Chadbourne Street and Jones Avenue was the former residence of the late Upshur D. Lewis and Sarah Core Lewis, parents of Gertrude Lewis Thornton. Over the years the building has been completely renovat- ed and remodeled to accommodate the growing business. In 1979 a chapel was added with additional seating for 100. The interior, a traditional colonial atmosphere, features soothing shades of rose and green with Chippendale furnish- ings and the most modern equipment. There are two chapels and visitation rooms, a family room, coffee lounge, as well as a minister’s study and meditation room. The facility features a music and public address system throughout the building, while retaining a homelike atmosphere. The Thornton family is dedicated to continuing the tradi- tion of continually maintaining their facilities to the highest standards, for the comfort of the families they serve.
