In fact, he is the first in his fam- ily to go into the profession. However, he is no stranger to compassion and giv- ing. As the son of a minister who spent his childhood moving across Canada and the United States caring for families and communities, Bob has a deep under- standing of how to care for people and an unfailing desire to establish himself as part of a community. Affectionately known as Bob Van, since his decidedly Dutch last name of Van Staalduinen is difficult to pronounce, he attended Calvin College in Grand Rap- ids, MI, where he met his wife Elaine. Bob is a graduate of the Worsham College of Mortuary Science. The couple married, and their first home was an apartment above a funeral home in the Chicago Lawn area. This environment further ce- mented their dreams of providing care to a local community. In 1988, he and Elaine purchased an old farmhouse on a beautiful piece of property in Lombard, IL filled with many trees. The couple envisioned building a place of comfort people could turn to during the most difficult times of their lives. One year later, in 1989, Knollcrest Funeral Home became a re- ality. They chose the name “Knollcrest” Steuerle Funeral Home was founded in 1952 by Lou Steuerle on Ardmore Avenue in Villa Park as a one chapel establishment. He expanded the funer- al home by adding an- other chapel and a family lounge. In 1969, Steuer- le Funeral Home was purchased by Archie R. Price, who operated it un- til his retirement 27 years later. Hank Ebeling ac- quired the home in 1996 after several years of man- aging it. Like the owners before him, Hank main- tained a high level of ser- vice and compassion that helped the Steuerle Funer- al Home stand out as one of the top funeral homes in the communities sur- rounding Villa Park. Unlike most family- owned funeral home own- ers, Bob Van Staalduinen because the property is located adjacent to Lombard’s Knolls Park and Congress Knolls neighborhoods. They designed Knollcrest, a first-gen- eration funeral home, to have a com- fortable, accessible atmosphere. All the public spaces are on one level for ease of access. The furniture arrangement pro- motes conversations, more like a living Continued on Page A26 K nollcrest F uneral H ome S teuerle F uneral H ome K nollcrest F uneral H ome K nollcrest F uneral H ome S teuerle F uneral H ome
